
Mr. Kassayi Hailu was born on July 19, 1950 in Zerema, Kilte Awlalo
district in Tigrai region, Ethiopia. In 1962, he left his village
for Eritrea. Between 1962-66 he was a retailer in Asab, a port. At
the end of 1966, he left Asab for Djibouti, and from there he traveled
to Somalia and Kenya. After staying sometime in Kenya, he sailed
to the Congo, then to Italy. He traveled to Greece, Germany, Russia,
Turkey, and Iraq. In 1970, He went to Cuba. After some time, in 1972,
he sailed to China, Japan, South Korea, Israel, and Denmark.
In 1974, he came to the United States and participated in different
noble causes with civic associations and liberation movements like
The Eritrean Liberation Front {ELF}, The Peoples Liberation Front
{EPLF}, and the Tigrai Liberation Front {TPLF}. His activities included
raising, donating, and contributing money to those causes. His support
to the Eritrean cause started in 1962.
In 1979, he helped establish the Tigrai Community in New York. In
1980, he helped by opening the community's Office at 107th and Broadway.
In the same year, he participated in the establishment of Tigrai
Development Association and made continuous contributions and donations
to the association. That association has been instrumental in the
establishment of schools and clinics in the Tigrai region of Ethiopia.
Since then, he has made tremendous sacrifices to the Tigrean community
in particular and the Ethiopian community in general.
From 1999 – 2003, he was an active Board Member of The Tigrai
Center in New York. From 2003-present, he is the President of African
Unity of Harlem. Mr. Kassayi is an energetic, dedicated, innovative
and productive individual with a high entrepreneurial spirit.
